Sometimes a picture is more than just a picture…

For no other reason than I like this photograph, which I took just off the Cowley Road in Oxford… and because Frank O’Hara writes so eloquently….

“Not you, lean quarterlies and swarthy periodicals
with your studious incursions toward the pomposity of ants,
nor you, experimental theatre in which Emotive Fruition
is wedding Poetic Insight perpetually, nor you,
promenading Grand Opera, obvious as an ear (though you
are close to my heart), but you, Motion Picture Industry,
it’s you I love….!”

Extract from “To the Film Industry in Crisis” by Frank O’Hara

  • Swappers

Am liking the O’Hara but if it turns out you’ve been in Oxford lately and not looked up The Swappers, there’ll be big trouble!
The cinema is a local favourite and used to be called the Penultimate Picture Palace which I prefer, if only for the alliteration. I guess it’s a local joke as finally he was bound to call his last attempt the ‘Ultimate’ but it still doesn’t ring as true as the PPP. Many firsts were shown here for this cinema goer not least hiding behind my hands, feeling sick during ‘Straw Dogs'[!]
