Towards a new Waste Land…

“The river’s tent is broken: the last fingers of leaf
Clutch and sink into the wet bank. The wind
Crosses the brown land, unheard. The nymphs are departed…”

[TS Elliot: “(iii). The Fire Sermon“, from the Waste Land]

River Cherwell.. John Callaway 2014

River Cherwell. John Callaway 2014

Apparently we’re all in this together….

As conspicuous consumption, spending beyond our means and shopping until we drop become the seasonal watchwords, perhaps its time to pay a little more attention to COP20, rather than FIFA15, GTA5 and XBox360.

COP20, the latest edition in a long running game of chance, pitting those with the greatest resources against those with the least, in a bid to save the planet…

An agreement has just been reached to reduce global carbon emissions, with all of the game players expected to put forward by March 2015 their proposed emissions reductions targets…. [Guardian 14/12/14]

“…but much remains vague or poorly defined. The countries put off decisions about the legal structure of the agreement, and deferred decisions about ensuring a flow of finance to developing countries….” [Guardian: ibid]

At some point the nymphs might depart for good…
