Chiaroscuro…

So first gig of the New Year…and what better way to start with Pompey punk band Acid Attack live at the Edge of the Wedge. Local venue, local band, local scene, decent beer, an appreciative audience, and a place to crash afterwards. Cheers JV….

The thing about small venues is that the stage lighting means that you’ve got to work with low and high-contrast lighting to create distinct areas of light and darkness. If you get it right, there’s an element of heightened drama or mystery. I quite like the full band photo, but the images of guitarist Andi and singer Jacko maybe have a different drama to the usual gig photos that I post here…

Which leads to chiaroscurio– the art of transfixing subjects in shafts of light and darkening shadows. The best exponent of this was using it in his paintings in the 17th Century….
