A few random thoughts following a couple of days of wandering through Shoreditch over the weekend …

“Some people become cops because they want to make the world a better place. Some people become vandals because they want to make the world a better looking place.”

Banksy: “Wall & Piece”

“I know, its only rock & roll, but I like it”, a certain Mr Jagger once sang.

…but is it radical, is it dangerous, does it mean anything? Maybe replace rock and roll with ‘street art’ and perhaps we’re left with the same set of questions.

Do we arrive at truth by shedding conformity? If progress comes when the official doctrines are overthrown, are street artists part of the movement against the dark forces of bigotry and incomprehension… the modern Van Gogh’s of political thought, the misunderstood and victimised heretics telling truth to power?

Are they defacing the neighbourhoods any more than “…the companies that scrawl their giant slogans across buildings and buses trying to make us feel inadequate unless we buy their stuff.

Say hello to the Emirates Spinnaker Tower, here in Portsmouth….

Think for yourselves people… 😉
